Analysis and Mitigation of DC Voltage Imbalance for Medium-Voltage Cascaded Three-level Neutral-Point-Clamped Converters

The cascaded three-level neutral-point-clamped (3L-NPC) converter and the modular multi-level (MMC) are attractive solutions for medium-voltage direct-current (MVDC) applications. Due to their low cost compared MMCs, 3L-NPC converters have been adopted in ANGLE-DCa 30 MVA MVDC link demonstration project North Wales, UK. DC voltage imbalance across submodules (SMs) is a common challenge both types of converters. Such topology dependent remains under-researched In this paper, small-signal model-based analysis has done reveal that dc caused by an unstable system pole. Two balancing methods presented. first method based on PI controllers precisely regulate SMs voltages without influencing output power. However, it relies communication between central controller local within SMs. second uses inverse-droop control take over regulation upon loss communication. Both experimentally validated using kVA testbed ANGLE-DC project. It demonstrated can be effectively balanced with during changes load conditions bus voltages.
